A sea of ideas, a pool of prototypes, and only a few fishes in the net of boardgames…

Sometimes i think it’s a waste of time to write what i’m doing, maybe i could use this time to review my boardgames prototypes, or to write some rules, or to remake my design…

And believe… i have a ton of ideias… and some, one day become prototypes, and only a few become boardgames prototypes tested over and over…

So i have a few rules… i don’t know if they are wright or not… or if it’s a good strategy… but at least, it’s a starting point:

  • I only test a prototype that have a rulebook printed.
  • i only make a prototype if i have a set of base rules writen
  • i have at all times a sketchbook where i write all my ideas, and notes
  • Each month i organize myself by categorizing my testing prototypes, prototypes waiting rules, ideas. and sometimes i give them a preference value.

This rules guide me in the creative steps of each project… so i don’t have 10 projects at the same time!

So let’s go with my November list:

(please don’t laugh with the lame names!!!!)

Testing prototypes:

  • Farwest
  • Help!
  • Bloggers
  • Mouse Chronicles: Riverbattle
  • Mouse Chronicles: Mudclash

Prototypes waiting rules:

  • End War
  • Futsal
  • Soccer Flow
  • Coolness Degree
  • Futsal Manager

Ideas:

  • Uprising of Kenya
  • Bounty Hunter
  • Space Meks
  • Mouse Chronicles: The Keep
  • Mouse Chronicles: Heroes
  • Mouse Chronicles: Seasons
  • Cargo
  • Bet and Win

So, lots of ideas, lots of prototypes… i need time to test and play and to mold the prototypes into games!

When someone wants a boardgame designer…

The Boardgame design business is hard… truly… for those who doesn’t knows it (as much as me, and i now little) only 20% of all ideas, are kinda good, and maybe only 3% turns into a game, and maybe only 1% is in fact a great game and a profit business (this numbers are fiction…).

However, most of the boardgame designers that i know, do it for the fun of it, for the magic that is turning an idea in something that can make others smile, and having fun (at least i do!)

But, it’s like a secret wish boardgame designers want to someday, somehow, get at least one game with is name on it… it’s true! And there is so little opportunities to do it…

But what if someone needs a Boardgame designer to design a game for a product?

  • How can they choose from? is there a list of boardgame designers… ?
  • What’s the skills that that designer must have? awesomeness, coolness, must be fast, and eat all the vegies… ?
  • Does he have to know the product? study it, eat it, live it… ?
  • Does he have to have a produced boardgame? or 2, or 10…
  • Does he know how to write rules? how can they measure that..
  • Does a boardgame designer must have a Blog, or some kind of social page, to have is work known? tumblr, facebook, twitter, worldpress, blogger…
  • Does a boardgame designer must have a portfolio or some kind of curriculum vitae for each prototype? boardgamegeek, the game crafter, etc…

each time another question…

My advice is to be ready if such opportunity arises… however, those who had or have that opportunity please… if you need help ask!
