A podcast and an interview!

Games by Manuel Correia

The Print ‘n Play Cast took a look at two games from the BGG Solo Contest: Austerity and Agent Decker! The whole podcast is well worth listening, but if you want to skip straight to the rules for Decker jump to 14:20 and if you want to listen to the review go to 24:22. They really liked it!

You can listen to it here.

Earlier in the year I was interviewed by David Wolinsky for “No don’t die”.

You can read it here.

It’s a long form interview about my experience with videogame design, the industry and the media that surrounds it. It was a very enjoyable conversation and I’m pleased that it wasn’t cut down for publishing.

There are so many great interviews on the site already, but if you want to keep them coming I suggest you to support it via Patreon.

iDIG Music Festival

Games by Manuel Correia

I spent the end of last week at the iDIG Music Festival showing my games to the visitors! I was surrounded by irish game developers showing their awesome games, and my boardgames stood out due to how different they were.

A lot of people wanted to know more about them, and some even sat down to play after asking how they worked! Agent Decker was the one that got played the most, mainly because nobody had heard about solo games and I could help them rather than compete against them.

I quickly put together a digital version for the show, and two players managed to complete it!

The main goal was to have a version which looked a bit better than my scribbles on paper, and figure out how much room there will be for proper art later on. It worked pretty well!

It was my first time showing games at…

The time of apocalypse is know for OzAG3

oZag3So what is the OzAG3?

One day me and my colleague were discussing a theme for a boardgame design based on a popular 90’s computer game called Chaos Overlord, and the theme is very strong in that game, even the random choices of units for attack they dont have a unified theme… it’s simple chaos!

So we’ve tryed to come out with a story theme, something that could wrap a bunch of ideas that still linger in our fingertips…

And then an idea born! how about ignoring the usual, “let’s made up a world” and we just said “lets made up an AGE”, where the currency is Oxygen… so everybody has a mask, and they have to fill it with O2 so they can be alive…

So Oz stands for an abreviation of Oxygen, and it’s the street name of the currency

AG3 stands for AGE, and all together it goes, its time to “OzAge” that means enter in a block and get all the goods you can get!

We have a couple of ideas, for the first prototypes… o2age_chaos_3

Just for a little peak in this new idea… i hope i can do posts about it!

See you soon!

Farwest – The reborn…

Five long months later… i’ve decided to revive my Jon Hare Fantasy Blog… don’t ask me why… i think i just needed to write something, even if it’s only for my eyes to see.

So, i’ve taken a personal goal to re-write the Farwest rules, so i could simplify the game, match the 30-45 min game for 2-4 players. The theme is still there, coherence in mechanics Vs theme still apply.

Here’s the major changes:

– Players are bad guys instead of good guys!!! nice!

– Actions are to deliver stolen goods, or to steal the shops!!! yeahh!

– There are objective cards!!

– you can trap the good guys to win major bonus

– the mechanic is focus on gaining cards, with combos, so the timing of each deliver is precisous

– Bounty Hunters (the good guys) will be in the board looking for you, each turn they will enteer a local, and remove cards and bonus from players.

– The end game depends on the number of players, 8 turns 4 players, 10 turns 3 players, 12 turns 2 players.

– The scoring is baasic 3 pts for the best, 1 pt for the worst in every category!

there are other changes but far less important than this ones, the game has the same feel, but i’ve been told that is a different game!

i think thats good…

See you soon!

It has been an eternity…

Hi guys, girls, ghosts, and fake readers…

It has been a long time ago… when i write something about board games…

Everyday i look into my little scrapbook, and read my scribbling and notes, about a lot of things and a lot of nothing…

Ideas, ideas, mechanics, themes… it’s all a bunch of symbols… and a lot of wannabe decisions to make…

by the rules of the game i should take one board game and take it to the end… but it keeps popping ideas… and i don’t have an ad block “idea” system installed… so i keep losing time writing about ideas, instead of helping one idea become something more.

Maybe i ‘m afraid that my little ideas grow… and leave me alone…

However… instead of losing time in mourning i should keep my head up and work something out!

iep… next thing in my list!! =) let’s wait for May…

Hard Life and then what?

It has been a long ride, with 2 kids. Lots of projects… and the usual limited time!

I started to sleep 4 hours a day a long time ago, and i’m happy and healthy, but somehow, in the last 2 months, i couldn’t sleep only 4 hours… ’cause… i cannot sleep them in a row… so i tried to go to bed earlier… it means that my projects time is less…

I had an objective in 2014 to buy one copy of one of my games in The Game Crafter page… and i still want that to happen!

However, i added two more projects to my list:

– a Co-design game with my best friend where the theme is a post-apocalypse year, where people have to pay for oxygen so they can survive.  Where each player is a kind of Gang lord, and have to control your gang and influence buildings, buy equipment and do a lot of Chaos in the other territories…

– I’ve accepted to help design the Gamification system to a website to help designers (like me) to play their prototype with players around the world… to help designers to have the proper tools to produce fun for everyone! i think i’m not allowed to tell more about this website, but as soon as i can i’ll post my updates! 😉

I’m Back… 2 months… 5kg of strenght!

It has been a wonderfull ride!

Maria is a quite baby… and Duarte is a cute boy! i’m lucky!

I decided to stop for some time, all my side projects and focus on time with my family.

However, projects arrive in a blink of an eye! And as soon as i had strenght to grab my tools … here am i!

I know that to be know in this small world, you have to be presence at all times… opportunitys may rise!

So i started by helping a friend in Co-designing a boardgame about Chaos Overlord, a 90’s PC game where the players have the ambition to control, influence, chaos the others players!

It’s kinda a mix of a lot of types but it is fun, and that is one major issue!

I’m currently working on designing the unit cards and the equipment cards, in a simple and washable prototype! I hope to have some news soon!

See you soon,

2013 is gone…

I’ve arrived 2014 a lot richer! My baby is born and is now 1 month of age!

I had a lot of time to think about all the projects that i have…

And i want to aim for a specific goal!

1 game published in the Game Crafter and buy my own game!
